British Science Week Gives Young People A ‘Sneak Peek’ Inside Science Creates Incubator

This week we join in the ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that is British Science Week

We will be working with our member companies to bring young people a special behind-the-scenes opportunity to see what goes on in a working science incubator.

During the live virtual tour, learners will be introduced to the variety of roles that keep the incubator running so the companies based there can make scientific discoveries that could change lives. After the tour, the group can ask scientists any question about their work.

Charlie Proctor, Science Creates Incubators’ COO, has put the experience together with the support of Speakers for Schools and West of England Combined Authority. Over the past four years, Charlie has led an immersive outreach programme at the incubator that takes hands-on science learning experiences out of the classroom and into the real world.

Temporarily outreach has moved online, due to the pandemic, but plans are in place for the continuation of the programme, especially once Science Creates’ second incubator is completed at the end of this year.

She said:

“We can’t let the pandemic take a whole year from our outreach programme. Now more than ever, young people need to see the range of opportunities out there. We still need to be supporting and developing the next generation of scientists and engineers.”

47 lucky secondary school students will join the insight session where they will meet the team behind the incubator, have a Q&A with a Scientist, take a virtual tour of the building and see some of the ground-breaking projects going on behind closed doors. Unsurprisingly, spaces for the tours were snapped up quickly by inquisitive young learners.

Our outreach programme underpins all that we do, by inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. As soon as it’s possible, we’ll be opening our doors to invite young learners into our incubator spaces to see them first-hand.

Educational Resources and Lesson Plans

Don’t forget to check out the series of unique online primary educational resources that we have created to support young people learning at home. Explore these at the link below, following the lesson plans to further your understanding of important scientific areas such as forces, electricity and the water cycle. The educational content has been produced to follow the national curriculum.
