Our story started in 2015, with Deep Tech founders who couldn’t find the resources they needed to build their ventures, so decided to take matters into their own hands.
Since then, we have worked to develop a UK-wide platform of support where Deep Tech startups can thrive. With technical founders and their teams always at the heart, the Science Creates ecosystem includes four pillars of activity that target key aspects of a startup’s journey — from ideation to growth — while also bringing science closer to people of all ages to inspire them to engage with STEM and entrepreneurship.
The story of Science Creates traces its roots back to 2014, with Ziylo, a University of Bristol spinout that developed a breakthrough platform technology for diabetes treatment. When Ziylo tried to find lab space in the city to continue developing its tech, the team found that none existed outside of the Golden Triangle.
Ziylo Co-Founder Harry Destecroix figured his couldn’t be the only technical team facing this barrier, so he started to rally people and resources to build Bristol’s first Deep Tech incubator. Science Creates was born, and its first incubator opened its doors in 2017.
A year after moving into the new incubator, Ziylo exited in a deal worth up to $800m.
Since then, Science Creates has significantly grown in size and scope but the core principle that started it all remains: supporting technical founders to take their scientific discoveries off the bench and change the world through advanced technologies for people and the planet.
Our activities now span four pillars of support for the Deep Tech community: Incubators (specialised lab space and services), VC (investment), Platform (training, events and partnerships) and Outreach (STEM programmes and public engagement).
Our pillars work together to empower those who are reshaping the world through science now, and those who will in generations to come.
True to our Bristol roots, we were born out of rebellion — asking ‘what if we did things differently?’ and challenging ‘why not?’ when told we couldn’t.
We firmly believe scientists make great entrepreneurs, and we witness it every day. With the right resources and support, Deep Tech startups won’t just be part of the 4th Industrial Revolution — they will lead it.
As we grow to become a UK-wide ecosystem, our spirit to change the world through a strong commitment to community is still unshakeable.
Founder
Harry is the Founder of the Science Creates ecosystem, Founder & Managing Partner of SCVC, and Trustee of Science Creates Outreach. He founded his first company, Ziylo, in 2014 during his chemistry PhD. As CEO, he led Ziylo to acquisition in 2018 in a deal worth up to $800m. Three years prior, Harry built Bristol’s first Deep Tech incubator (thus founding Science Creates) after identifying the need for specialised lab space for startups in Bristol. In 2020, he founded SCVC, Science Creates’ VC arm, to back category-defining Deep Tech companies in the UK.
Harry’s work has been recognised multiple times, winning the 2023 RSC award for Chemistry World Entrepreneur of the Year and Barclays’ Icon of the Year entrepreneurship award in 2021. In 2025, Harry was awarded an MBE in the King’s 2025 New Year Honours List for his services to science.

Head of Property
Ashley has been part Science Creates since 2016, playing a key role in the design and operational planning of all its incubators. Over the years, he has held several leadership positions, including serving as CEO of Science Creates’ property and operating companies from 2022 to 2024, where he remains a Director.
Currently, Ashley leads the Property team, managing the organisation’s incubators while actively planning future incubator projects. He holds a PhD in organic electronics and supramolecular chemistry and has 15 years of experience managing laboratory environments.
Head of VC
Cath joined SCVC at its inception, leveraging her scientific expertise to transition from academic research to a leadership role in venture capital. Since helping to found SCVC, she has developed and implemented all key investment and portfolio management processes. Cath manages SCVC’s deal and fund structures, executing over 30 deals in the last 3 years and establishing SCVC Fund 2 with a novel structure. She also directs SCVC’s contributions to Science Creates' national accelerator programmes and provides mentorship within the Science Creates ecosystem. She has a PhD in Supramolecular Chemistry from the University of Bristol and has completed a number of Post-Doctoral positions across Imperial, Southampton & Queen Mary Universities.
Head of Platform
Francis joined Science Creates in 2022 and designed and launched the company’s first UK-wide Engineering Biology Accelerator in partnership with UKRI, which was relaunched again the following year after its huge success.
Francis brings a mixed bag of experience to Science Creates, combining direct entrepreneurial and software experience through founding Testbuds, a successful feedback platform for food products.
He also brings a breath of technical knowledge to the team, including a QTEC Biodesign Enterprise Fellowship, research funding expertise, early-stage Deep Tech training, and a PhD in Organic Chemistry where he was part of a team that built a "world-first” replica of a GPCR receptor, published in a leading international science journal.
Head of Outreach
Formally a primary school teacher in inner-city Bristol, Charlie is an founding member of the Science Creates team, originally joining to lead on HR and operations. She is passionate about making sure all young people have access to enjoy and learn from the world around them, which resulted in her founding and running Science Creates Outreach — our STEM education charity. When she’s not inspiring the next generation of scientists, Charlie is outdoors, camping and exploring new places.
Head of Outreach (maternity cover)
Ben joined Science Creates in 2024 as maternity cover for the charity’s CEO & Founder, Charlie Proctor. Sporting both a BSc in Chemistry and a PGCE from the University of Leeds, Ben brings a combined passion for science and education to his role as Head of Outreach, delivering engaging STEM workshops to the next generation of leaders, pioneers and entrepreneurs. Ben has strong experience in a variety of educational settings, with a focus on supporting disadvantaged young people and those with SEND.

Keith acts as a mentor to staff and to supports our business efforts in any way he can.
IsomAb is developing isoform specific antibodies to treat patients with diseases that currently have limited or no treatment options. Its bioinformatics and knowledge-based platform approach has identified the therapeutic antibody ISM-001 as a development candidate for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). By progressing this through clinical trials, it has the potential to significantly improve the wellbeing of those affected by PAD which causes risk factors such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.
